PAVILION OVERLOOKING THE OCEAN

Coromandel, New Zealand.
New build.
Completed 2024.

Commissioned to create a pavilion for use as a private gym overlooking the ocean and set above an existing residence, we developed a rhythmic expressed structural system, creating five bays for occupation - two open air spaces for yoga, and three protected from the elements housing gym equipment.

A long verandah spaces continues along the front of the five bays, creating a deep recess which shades the interior and allows the building to visually recess back into the bush line from the exterior.

Where small projects and simple briefs are often seen as limited opportunities for architectural experience, this project provided an opportunity to demonstrate the value of clarity of concept, attention to proportion and relationship to the landscape. The resulting pavilion is both a joy to look at and to occupy - with the broad views to the ocean and green foreground turning an everyday workout into a contemplative and deeply enjoyable experience.
