Just north of Basel city centre, in the leafy suburb of Riehen, the clients are working with a local design-build firm to construct a new family home. Dovetailing into the design and planning approvals processes, the project focusses on refining the architecture and interiors.

By optimising the flow and proportions of the internal spaces and carefully selecting the finishes, textures and tones, the raw shell will be transformed into a personal and comfortable home reflecting their individual lifestyle.

Within the square plan, separate but connected spaces are created, allowing the family to relax together, or to find more private spaces to work or read. The stairwell provides the opportunity to give a sense of volume, while bringing soft natural light deep into the house.

Using hardwearing natural materials, the home combines a refined industrial look with a warm, sophisticated atmosphere. The completed building will be a place that feels familiar and calming to come home to.
