Boutique Hotel in Catalonia

Banyoles, Girona, Spain.
Hotel renovation and transformation.
Completed April 2023.

Amidst olive groves and wheat fields overlooking the lake of Banyoles lies Can Campolier, a Catalan estate dating back to the 17th century. Set around a cobbled courtyard, the charming collection of rural buildings are slowly being brought back to life as authentic guest accommodation and a broader cycling and hospitality offering.

In the main house, vaulted ceilings and richly patterned floor tiles recall the once luxuriously decorated rooms. Without unravelling these layered spaces and deep histories, the interior is reconfigured to provide private guest suites and communal spaces which offer an understated luxury while retaining a sense of nostalgia for an older, simpler way of life.

Drawing on the unique floor tiles, each guest room takes on an individual character. Walls and ceilings are wrapped in rich colours of natural lime wash paint, instilling an atmosphere of comfort and character. Dark wood and simple candle-like lighting elements bring warmth and depth.

A minimal and curated approach to furnishing adds to the understated experience. Authentic Catalan antique chairs are paired with custom-made sideboards and simple modern fittings. A rural retreat that is at once authentic and fresh.
